Overview
Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has invited online applications for the recruitment of Scientist 'B' posts on a regular basis in its scientific cadre under Advertisement No. BSIP/SCI-B/01/2026, dated 7 August 2026. A total of 19 vacancies are available, including reservation for EWS candidates. BSIP was established in 1946, originally as the Institute of Palaeobotany at Lucknow, and was renamed in honour of its founder, the eminent palaeobotanist Professor Birbal Sahni. Over nearly eight decades, it has grown into one of the world's leading centres for palaeobotanical and palaeoclimatic research, housing extensive fossil collections and playing a central role in reconstructing India's deep geological and botanical past, including the fossil record of the Gondwana and Deccan Trap regions. Selected Scientist B candidates will join BSIP's research programmes spanning palaeontology, palaeobotany, palaeoclimatology, palynology, geochemistry, and emerging areas such as ancient DNA and metagenomics, planetary geosciences, astrobiology, and the application of artificial intelligence and remote sensing/GIS techniques to palaeoscience research. The post is placed at Pay Level 10 under the 7th Central Pay Commission. Candidates need either an M.Sc. with first division in Biosciences, Geology, Physics, Chemistry, or an allied Earth Science discipline along with 3 years of relevant research experience, or a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline. BSIP evaluates applications not only on formal qualification but also on demonstrated research output — a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals substantially strengthens an application even among candidates who meet only the minimum threshold. For early-career and mid-career scientists, a Scientist B appointment at BSIP offers direct access to this fossil archive alongside modern laboratory infrastructure for isotope geochemistry, palynology, and increasingly computational and AI-driven palaeoscience research. The BSIP Scientist B 2026 online application is available at bsip.res.in under the Career and BSIP Recruitment Portal section. The online registration process begins on 10 August 2026 at 10:00 AM, and the last date to submit the online application and pay the applicable fee is 4 September 2026, up to 5:00 PM. In addition to the online submission, candidates must send a hard copy of the completed application along with self-attested copies of mark sheets, certificates, degrees, testimonials, and the Demand Draft, through Speed Post or Registered Post only, to the Registrar, BSIP, so as to reach the institute by 11 September 2026, by 5:30 PM. Candidates must read the complete official BSIP Scientist B 2026 notification PDF before applying.
