IBPS SO 2026 — Specialist Officer Exam Guide for Scale-II & III

IBPS SO (Specialist Officer) recruitment fills specialist positions in public sector banks for candidates with professional qualifications in IT, Law, Agriculture, HR, Marketing, and Rajbhasha (Hindi). Unlike IBPS PO/Clerk which are generalist posts, SO positions require domain-specific degrees and experience.

Specialist Officer Posts & Eligibility

Scale-II Posts (Officer Grade)

IT Officer: B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science/IT/Electronics OR MCA OR equivalent. GATE score may be considered for some banks.

Agriculture Field Officer: 4-year degree in Agriculture/Horticulture/Animal Husbandry/Veterinary Science/Dairy Science/Agri Engineering/Fishery Science/Pisciculture/Agri Marketing from a recognized university.

Law Officer: Bachelor's Degree in Law (LLB) + enrolled as Advocate with Bar Council. Minimum 2 years' experience in legal practice.

HR/Personnel Officer: Graduate + PG Diploma/MBA in HR/Personnel Management/Industrial Relations/Labour Welfare. Minimum 1 year experience.

Marketing Officer: MBA in Marketing OR equivalent from a recognized institution.

Rajbhasha Adhikari: Post-Graduate degree in Hindi with English as a subject at degree level OR Post-Graduate in Sanskrit with Hindi and English at degree level.

Scale-III Posts (Senior Officer)

Same specializations as Scale-II but require minimum 5 years of experience in the relevant field. Higher pay scale and responsibility.

Age Limit: Scale-II: 20-30 years. Scale-III: 20-35 years (with standard relaxations).

Exam Pattern

Prelims (Objective — for Scale-II only)

Mains (Professional Knowledge — for all)

The Mains paper tests your specialist knowledge — IT concepts for IT Officer, agricultural practices for AFO, legal knowledge for Law Officer, etc.

Interview: 100 marks

Final merit: Mains (80%) + Interview (20%)

IBPS SO Salary

Scale-II: ₹48,170-₹69,810 (basic pay range)

• Gross: ₹58,000-₹65,000/month
• In-hand: ₹50,000-₹55,000/month

Scale-III: ₹63,840-₹78,230

• Gross: ₹72,000-₹82,000/month
• In-hand: ₹62,000-₹70,000/month

SO posts offer higher starting salary than PO because they require specialized qualifications.

Which SO Post Has Highest Vacancies?

Historically, IT Officer and Agriculture Field Officer have the most vacancies (300-500 each). Law Officer and Rajbhasha have fewer vacancies (50-100 each). HR and Marketing are the most competitive due to fewer vacancies and more applicants.
