The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) conducts the Grade A Officer recruitment exam every year to select Assistant Managers across General, Agriculture and Rural Development Banking (ARD), Rural Development Banking Service (RDBS), and specialist streams such as IT, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and more. The selection process consists of three stages — Preliminary Examination, Mains Examination, and Interview.

Phase I is only a qualifying stage for General and ARD streams — marks are not counted for final merit, but candidates must clear the sectional and overall cut-off to proceed to Phase II.

Phase I (Preliminary) Syllabus

The Preliminary exam is objective-type and covers five sections:

  • Reasoning: Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, coding-decoding, blood relations, and data sufficiency
  • English Language: Reading comprehension, cloze test, error detection, sentence rearrangement, and vocabulary-based questions
  • Computer Knowledge: Basics of computer hardware, software, networking, MS Office applications, and internet fundamentals
  • Quantitative Aptitude: Simplification, number series, data interpretation, profit and loss, time and work, percentages, and averages
  • General Awareness: Current affairs, banking awareness, agriculture and rural development news, government schemes, and economic survey highlights

Additionally, for the General/ARD stream, Phase I includes a section on Economic and Social Issues along with Agriculture and Rural Development, which carries significant weight in scoring.

Phase II (Mains) Syllabus

Phase II is descriptive in nature and consists of three papers, with the specific papers varying by stream:

Paper I — General English

Tests writing skills through essay writing, précis writing, and comprehension-based questions, assessing the candidate's ability to express ideas clearly and coherently in a professional context.

Paper II — Economic and Social Issues (ESI)

Covers Indian economy fundamentals, rural economy and development, poverty and unemployment, social justice, agricultural marketing, financial inclusion, and current socio-economic issues affecting rural India.

Paper III — Specialization Paper

This paper varies based on the stream the candidate has applied for:

  • Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD): Agriculture, agricultural economics, animal husbandry, rural development, and cooperative banking
  • General: Management, banking and financial systems, and rural development topics
  • IT Specialist: Computer science fundamentals, data structures, database management, networking, and software engineering
  • Civil Engineering: Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction management, and rural infrastructure
  • Electrical Engineering: Power systems, electrical machines, and renewable energy applications relevant to rural electrification

Interview Stage

Candidates who clear both Phase I and Phase II are called for a Personal Interview. The interview assesses the candidate's overall personality, communication skills, knowledge of banking and rural development, current affairs awareness, and suitability for a career at NABARD. Final selection is based on combined marks from Phase II and the Interview.
