Agniveer Vayu Group Structure

The IAF's Agnipath entry for airmen is divided by academic stream:

  • Other Than Science Group (Y Group): For candidates from any stream who do not have the Science subject combination
  • X+Y Combined: For science candidates who wish to be eligible for both groups in a single sitting

Subject-Wise Syllabus

Science Group: The online test runs 60 minutes and covers English, Physics and Mathematics, all set at the CBSE Class 12 (10+2) level. Physics topics typically include mechanics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics, while Mathematics draws from algebra, trigonometry, calculus, coordinate geometry, and probability — largely mirroring the NCERT Class 11–12 curriculum.

Other Than Science Group: This paper runs 45 minutes and tests English (10+2 level) along with Reasoning and General Awareness (commonly abbreviated RAGA). Reasoning includes verbal and non-verbal topics such as coding-decoding, blood relations, number series, and distance-direction problems, while General Awareness spans current affairs, general science, history, geography, civics and basic computer knowledge.

Combined (X+Y): Candidates attempting both groups sit for an 85-minute paper covering English, Physics, Mathematics, Reasoning and General Awareness together.

Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

The Agniveer Vayu online test is objective (MCQ) type and bilingual in English and Hindi, except for the English section itself, which is tested only in English. The marking scheme commonly applied is +1 for each correct answer and a fractional negative deduction for each incorrect response, so candidates should avoid random guessing on questions they are unsure of. Candidates must clear the qualifying cutoff in each individual section they attempt — clearing the overall total alone is not sufficient.

After the written test, candidates who qualify proceed to the Physical Fitness Test, Adaptability Test-I, Adaptability Test-II, and a medical examination conducted by IAF medical authorities.

Preparation Strategy

For the Science group, NCERT Class 11–12 Physics and Mathematics textbooks form the core preparation base — build strong fundamentals first, then move to previous-year Agniveer Vayu papers for exam-specific practice. For the Other Than Science group, a daily current affairs habit covering the last six to twelve months is essential for General Awareness, alongside regular practice of standard reasoning question types.
