RBI Assistant Syllabus 2026: Prelims, Mains & LPT Exam Pattern

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recruits Assistants — a clerical-level banking post — through one of the most competitive exams in the sector. The RBI Assistant Syllabus 2026 spans three stages: a Preliminary Examination, a Main Examination, and a Language Proficiency Test (LPT). Only a Bachelor's degree is required to apply; no technical qualification is needed. Both the Prelims and Mains are objective, online, and carry a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer, with no deduction for unanswered questions. The Prelims is only a screening stage — its marks are not counted in the final merit — while the Mains marks decide selection, subject to qualifying the LPT.

RBI Assistant Selection Process 2026

The recruitment is conducted in three stages:

  • Preliminary Examination — objective screening test, qualifying in nature
  • Main Examination — objective test with a wider syllabus, merit-deciding
  • Language Proficiency Test (LPT) — assesses the local/official language of the allotted office

Candidates must clear both sectional and overall cut-offs at each online stage to advance. The final merit is based on Mains marks, provided the candidate qualifies the LPT.

RBI Assistant Prelims Exam Pattern

The Prelims is a 60-minute objective test with sectional timing of 20 minutes per section.

  • English Language — 30 questions — 30 marks — 20 minutes
  • Numerical Ability — 35 questions — 35 marks — 20 minutes
  • Reasoning Ability — 35 questions — 35 marks — 20 minutes
  • Total — 100 questions — 100 marks — 60 minutes

Negative marking is 0.25 per wrong answer. The Prelims is qualifying only; its marks are not included in the final merit list.

RBI Assistant Mains Exam Pattern

The Mains is a 135-minute objective test across five sections, each with its own sectional timing.

  • Test of English Language — 40 questions — 40 marks — 30 minutes
  • Test of Numerical Ability — 40 questions — 40 marks — 30 minutes
  • Test of Reasoning Ability — 40 questions — 40 marks — 30 minutes
  • Test of Computer Knowledge — 40 questions — 40 marks — 20 minutes
  • Test of General Awareness — 40 questions — 40 marks — 25 minutes
  • Total — 200 questions — 200 marks — 135 minutes

Negative marking is 0.25 per wrong answer. Except for the English Language section, other sections are available in both English and Hindi.

RBI Assistant Prelims Syllabus

English Language: Reading comprehension, cloze test, para jumbles, spotting errors, fill in the blanks, sentence correction and improvement, synonyms and antonyms, and vocabulary.

Numerical Ability: Simplification and approximation, number series, data interpretation, quadratic equations, ratio and proportion, percentages, averages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, mensuration, permutation and combination, and probability.

Reasoning Ability: Puzzles and seating arrangement, syllogism, blood relations, direction sense, coding and decoding, inequalities, order and ranking, alphanumeric series, data sufficiency, input–output, and logical reasoning.

RBI Assistant Mains Syllabus

The Mains repeats the three Prelims subjects at a higher difficulty and adds two more:

Computer Knowledge: Basics of computers, history and generations, hardware and software, input and output devices, memory and storage, operating systems, MS Office, internet and networking, database basics, computer shortcuts, and computer security and abbreviations.

General Awareness: Current affairs of the last four to six months, banking and financial awareness, RBI and its functions, monetary policy, static general knowledge, Indian economy, government schemes, and important national and international events. Banking awareness carries significant weight and should be a priority area.

The English, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning Ability sections in the Mains follow the same topics as the Prelims but with greater depth and difficulty.

RBI Assistant Language Proficiency Test (LPT)

Candidates provisionally shortlisted from the Mains must appear for the LPT. It is conducted in the official or local language of the state from which the candidate has applied and assesses the ability to read, write, and speak that language. The LPT is qualifying in nature and carries no marks, but clearing it is mandatory — a candidate who fails to prove proficiency in the local language is disqualified from the selection process.

Preparation Tips

  • Since English, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning appear in both stages, build a strong foundation in these early — the effort compounds across Prelims and Mains.
  • Practise with sectional timing from day one, as both stages enforce time limits per section.
  • Give Banking and General Awareness dedicated daily time for the Mains; it is scoring and fast to attempt.
  • Solve previous years' papers and full-length mocks to manage the 0.25 negative marking.
  • If your allotted office language is not your native tongue, prepare for the LPT well in advance — it is a mandatory qualifying stage.
